Note to Self...November 4, 2024
Allowing Others to Give Their Best Have you ever made the connection between forgiveness and coaching? It's like the word "love" in that it doesn't get used often enough in the workplace. In our last session with Physician Life Care Planning we discussed this concept. It comes from the book Having a Catch and simply says that we must have a forgiving spirit if we want to truly coach, whether that be in a mentor, counselor, instructor, or just a feedback role. Mistakes will be made and should be corrected. But when they are made in a growth mode, the coaching must done with compassion and with a spirit of forgiveness. When we do this as leaders, we begin to separate fear from mistakes. Fear is the killer of growth; stunting growth and leading to more mistakes. Ask a baseball infielder what happens when fear sets in after an error. Thoughts?
